2015 February I installed this ongoing series of drawings as a visual collage in the exhibition Wonder. I combined imagery from observation, photographic, and drawn references, and invention. I merge change and transformation we experience continuously in our sensory and emotional selves. The imagery reflects teeth as anatomy, body, personal space, themes of pain, anxiety, fear, and dental care.
These respond to and participate in an ongoing interdisciplinary collaborative dialogue between UNE graduate students Jessfor Baugh, Riddi Daftary with UNE faculty Dr. Michael Truscott and Dr. David Pier, and curator, Dorothy Royle. The collaboration was initiated for a University-wide project and the drawings were included in the subsequent video Compassionate Touch.

This drawing became the inspiration for a mural, Voyage, and a tattoo. I draw and painted this image on the wall at the Thompson Gallery at the Cambridge School for the exhibit Strange Glue curated by Todd Bartel. Bartel invited artists to consider and redefine collage, the language of collage. I often assemble and reassemble images in a cut and paste method. I drew images as a collection on the wall with charcoal underdrawing and acrylic paint. This mural was 102 x 88 inches, took about five hours, completed it free-hand on site.

2010 Natural Overlaps at Silvermine Guild Arts Center
A two-year collaboration with Susan Newbold:
Natural Overlaps witnesses an ongoing visual dialogue between artists Susan Newbold and Alex Rheault, who for almost two years explored drawing and printmaking techniques in both collaborative and solitary practices where those coincide and what emerges. Newbold and Rheault provide windows into private moments of making, reflection, process, the natural and the sensory, the imagined and the perceived co-exist in a series of small and large scale works on paper created over time.

drawing and madness
These drawings contemplate fragmentation of self, broken, in transition, recovering from injury, and resilience. Some of the works below are in some cases commissioned or relate to a specific project. These are interpretive expressions; I am illustrating something we avoid, apply drawing to visually describe a fleeting sensation, the result of trauma, separation, anguish, or inexplicable disorientations. Madness and the unhinged self are of interest, psychological spaces, sensory experiences, pain, rapture, and all in between spaces, invisible and difficult to represent are a visual challenge I enjoy.

Above figure: the beginning of a “doll” or figure for the project at drawing room called “Metamorphosis: A Journey of Dolls”. I used an image of Madonna and Renaissance costume to inspire the headdress and face harness. The next artist who worked on this left nothing of this figure in her work. I am guessing there was something threatening for her, something so horrific in it, and she needed to “bury” it.
